When you visit Aviemore, nestled in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, you're spoiled for choice when it comes to walks and hikes. But one that should sit high on your list is Craigellachie. Just a short stroll from Aviemore's bustling village centre, Craigellachie Nature Reserve offers a perfect blend of accessibility, breathtaking views, and Highland tranquillity.

The Start of the Adventure

The trailhead begins near the Aviemore Youth Hostel, only minutes from the train station and local cafes. Within moments, you leave behind the hum of village life and enter a world of ancient birchwood, mirror-like lochans, and the scent of pine and heather.

The Climb to the Summit

The well-marked path climbs gently at first, winding through the nature reserve's lower slopes. Depending on your pace, you can reach the summit in 30 to 45 minutes. As you ascend, glimpses of the Cairngorm Mountains emerge, and the higher you climb, the more panoramic the views become.

Views of Aviemore below

At the summit, you're rewarded with a sweeping vista: Aviemore nestled below, the River Spey glinting in the sun, and the towering Munros of the Cairngorm plateau in the distance. It's a view that captures the essence of Strathspey and the Highlands beyond.

Wildlife and Nature

Craigellachie is more than just a viewpoint; it's a haven for wildlife. Look out for soaring buzzards, delicate butterflies, and if you're lucky, a fleeting glimpse of roe deer or even a pine marten. The reserve is managed by NatureScot, ensuring its rich biodiversity is preserved for generations to come.

Perfect for All Seasons

Whether it's a bright summer morning or a frosty winter afternoon, Craigellachie offers something special year-round. The path is suitable for most fitness levels, though sturdy footwear is always recommended. In spring and summer, wildflowers blanket the slopes, while autumn brings a blaze of gold and russet to the birch trees.

A Highland Gem on Your Doorstep

What makes Craigellachie such a must-do hike is its perfect balance: a short, accessible walk that delivers truly spectacular rewards. For visitors to Aviemore, it's an ideal introduction to the landscapes that make the Cairngorms so beloved. And for locals, it's a timeless favourite for a quick escape into nature.

So next time you're in Aviemore, lace up your boots, pack a flask of tea, and head up Craigellachie. The Highlands are waiting.
