Tucked beneath the dramatic northern flanks of the Cairngorm Mountains, Glenmore is one of the Highlands' true gems. Just a short drive or bus ride from Aviemore, this beautiful glen offers a perfect day out for visitors of all ages, blending breathtaking scenery, outdoor adventure, and a true taste of Highland nature.

Morning: Loch Morlich and a Highland Breakfast

Start your day with a hearty Highland breakfast in Aviemore or at one of Glenmore's cosy cafes. With energy stores replenished, head straight to Loch Morlich, Scotland's highest sandy beach. The golden sands, framed by towering Scots pines and snow-capped peaks, offer a unique setting for a morning stroll. The flat, well-maintained trail around the loch (around 3.5 miles) is ideal for families and walkers of all abilities. Watch for red squirrels darting among the trees and ospreys circling above.

Midday: Into the Forest and Up the Mountains

From Loch Morlich, follow one of the many trails leading into the ancient Caledonian pine forest. The Ryvoan Pass trail is a favourite, leading walkers past the emerald waters of An Lochan Uaine (the Green Lochan), steeped in local folklore. For those seeking more of a challenge, consider a guided hike up Meall a' Bhuachaille for panoramic views across the Cairngorms.

Cyclists will also find Glenmore a haven, with excellent mountain biking trails weaving through the forest. Bikes can be hired locally in Aviemore for those without their own.

Afternoon: Wildlife and Reindeer Encounters

No trip to Glenmore is complete without a visit to the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre. Scotland's only free-ranging reindeer herd roams the high plateaus, but visitors can often join a guided hill trip to meet them up close. For wildlife lovers, the nearby RSPB Loch Garten Nature Reserve (a short drive away) offers the chance to spot ospreys, capercaillie, and more.

Evening: Relax, Refuel, and Reflect

As the day winds down, return to Glenmore or Aviemore for a well-earned meal. Local inns and restaurants offer menus rich with Highland produce, from venison and salmon to warming bowls of Cullen skink. If you're lucky, you might catch a spectacular sunset behind the mountains, painting the sky in fiery hues.

A Day You'll Never Forget

Whether you're seeking adventure, tranquillity, or simply a breath of fresh Highland air, Glenmore offers an unforgettable day out in the Cairngorms National Park. It’s a place where ancient forests meet alpine scenery, and where every visitor leaves with lasting memories.
